For far too long, persons with speech difficulties have battled to be understood by others, as well as voice-based technology. Though some firms have begun to improve their products to accommodate persons with unusual speech, the majority of services continue to struggle to understand them. Project Relate, an app developer’s new Android software from Google, might help individuals with speech problems connect more readily with others and the Assistant, according to the company. Starting today, it’s searching for beta testers to help test and develop the software.

“Standard speech recognition doesn’t necessarily function as well for people with unusual speech because the algorithms haven’t been trained on samples of their speech,” Google Research product manager Julie Cattiau stated in a video. Custom models developed on each user’s speech patterns would be used in Project Relate. When someone first opens the app, it will ask them to repeat a few phrases so that the app can build a base model and learn how they speak.

Project Relate may then perform one of three things: transcribe the user’s speech into text that they can copy and paste or present to others on their screen, read aloud what the user said in a synthetic voice, and converse with Google Assistant.

The software is still being evaluated, and applicants for beta testing roles will be contacted “in the coming months,” according to the business. However, this is a critical first step in improving speech recognition for people who speak in unconventional ways.
